Get Involved

Inland whale research depends on a broad network of observers, supporters, and partners. Whether you're a scientist, a water recreation enthusiast, or simply someone who has seen something unexpected in a local lake — there's a place for you at IIWS.

01

Citizen Science

Register as an IIWS Observer and submit sightings through our standardized reporting portal. Verified observers receive quarterly briefings and early access to new location data.

02

Volunteer Field Work

Join seasonal field expeditions to assist with hydrophone deployment, water sampling, and observation logging. No scientific background required — training provided.

03

Research Partnerships

Academic institutions and independent researchers can apply for collaborative research status. IIWS shares field access, acoustic archives, and photo-ID databases with approved partners.

04

Donate

IIWS is a non-profit research organization. Donations support field equipment, Proceedings publication, public education programming, and the ongoing maintenance of our hydrophone arrays.

05

IIWS Proceedings Lecture Series

Attend our annual public lecture series at the Tempe Town Lake Research Station. Events are free and open to the public. Topics range from field methodology to policy and conservation.

06

Institutional Membership

Organizations including water utilities, recreational associations, and municipal agencies can apply for institutional membership to receive hazard advisories, safety protocols, and consultation services.
